The CBYX (Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange) scholarship is a prestigious cultural exchange program between the United States and Germany. It was established in 1983 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the first German immigration to the United States.
The program is funded jointly by the U.S. Congress and the German Bundestag (parliament) and is administered in the United States by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, while in Germany it is overseen by the Bundestag.
CBYX offers an opportunity for American high school students and young professionals aged 15-24 to spend a year in Germany, while German students and young professionals have the chance to study and work in the United States. The program aims to promote mutual understanding and cultural exchange between the two countries by fostering personal and professional connections.
The scholarship provides participants with a unique experience of living with host families, attending German schools, universities, or vocational institutions, and undertaking internships or work placements. Participants also engage in cultural activities, language courses, and excursions to explore the history, politics, and culture of Germany.
CBYX participants gain valuable insights into the German and American society, language, and lifestyle, developing a deep appreciation for the intercultural differences and similarities between the United States and Germany. They become cultural ambassadors, building bridges between the two nations and forming lifelong connections with people from different backgrounds.
CBYX scholarship offers a transformative experience that broadens participants’ horizons, enhances their intercultural competence, and fosters international friendship and cooperation.
