Is Cybersecurity a Good Major?

Cybersecurity as a major teaches students to identify Vulnerabilities in a computer system, recognize its digital exploitation and prevent harmful damages such as loss of data, virus attacks and loss of key access to files and documents. The course teaches individuals security mechanisms to be implemented in the computer system to prevent such losses and preventive measures to avoid such attacks and professional counterattacks against cyber threats.

Cybersecurity is designed to make students proficient in technology processes and practices created to protect computers, networks and data from encountering damages due to cyber-attacks and unauthorized access. As a course, it would provide students with skills and knowledge that can easily detect vulnerabilities in a computer network, fend off attacks and effectively respond to emergencies. It is safe to say cybersecurity experts are internet (technology) law enforcers.

Why Study Cyber Security

With a world ever involved in technology where basically everything is being replaced in one way or another, now more than ever, we need Cybersecurity against possible threats to our technology, as they can be at risk too. Living in such a digital age as we are in today, more people have access to advanced technology, which means more individuals have access to more technologies, ready to exploit them for crimes, threats and even theft. This is where Cybersecurity comes in to help protect personal, public and even government data from such cyber threats.

According to cyber security expert Bogdan Botezatu who is a senior E-Threat Analyst at Bitdefender, “Right now, people new to cyber security have way more options in the technology field, they are exposed to interactive classes with extremely skilled tutors, internship in well established cybersecurity companies, local conferences and cybersecurity talks”. This means that the world is now well aware of the need to protect our data and files entrusted into the hands of technology, and therefore need cyber security personnel to serve as our technology police.

Benefits of Studying CyberSecurity

One of the beautiful things about Cybersecurity is the fact that it is still a new branch of the much larger computer science; this means that its potential has yet to be fully explored, making it an interesting, adventurous course to study.

Studying Cyber Security opens you to a deeper base of the internet, giving technology a more explained definition. It helps build core knowledge around computer systems and network security theory processes. The program helps in planning and executing security strategies that would reduce cyber risks and provide more protection for information, assets, and the general network system. Graduates of Cybersecurity are also well grounded in computer terms and technology analogies, effectively communicating verbally and in writing with individuals, corporate management and government bodies on cybersecurity-related issues, breaking down complex computer terms to an average man. Cyber Security is an easy way into the now growing technology-driven society, providing a more advanced meaning on how best to protect and secure the way we handle and operate this global network. It also provides us with some career-changing benefits, such as;

Network Connectivity

Thanks to Cybersecurity, technology has become a safer broad range of networking, reducing harm and data destruction, replacing it with a more trusted and safer environment for people and technology to collaborate and provide that global village we all want to see thrive.

Multiple Viable Educational Path

Since Cybersecurity is still a new and yet-to-be-fully-explored course, there are no expectations on the right path to follow when teaching or learning the course. This has helped people develop the course into the global standard it has become today, adding a bit of system management, networking, or even programming to make it all worth it.

Explore new technologies

A student of Cybersecurity from Rasmussen University once said that Cybersecurity is like a puzzle, claiming that the more you solve it, the more tasks and puzzles it brings for you to solve. This has helped bring new advanced technology development and improve the general security of the internet system.

Solve Cyber Issues

Cybersecurity is the back rock of anti-viruses, security patch updates, data security and privacy, end-to-end encryption, and other security prevention and implementation steps taken to improve technology and internet services.

Career Opportunities in Cybersecurity

Thanks to the vast network and technology subjects exposed to during the study of Cybersecurity, graduates are often well-grounded in general computer knowledge. They can easily work in various related industries. Cybersecurity provides various career opportunities in private and public sectors, for government and agencies and even for those who want to become entrepreneurs on their own. Some of these careers include;

  • Network Security Engineer
  • Security Analyst
  • Computer Forensic
  • IT Auditor
  • Security Consultant
  • Cryptographic
  • Ethical Hacker
  • Security Architect
  • MalwareAnalyst
  • Chief Information Security Officer (CISO)
  • Application Security Engineer
  • General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
  • Web Developer

Cybersecurity is today the backbone of technology and the internet. What good would the internet be with cyber security personnel to protect it from malfunction and illegal disruption of what it stands for? All these provide how important Cybersecurity is and how much of a big step you would be taking into a whole new adventurous world if you decide to take it as your major in college.
